Homemade BBQ Sauce

I have no idea why, but I was really craving BBQ sauce today. Although I am tempted to blame my housemates, one of whom made BBQ fajitas a few nights ago and another who keeps buying BBQ sauce and flaunting it! So, in order to prevent some seriously out of order condiment theft, I whipped this up. Use it for dunking, or try marinating some meat in it before cooking, either on the barbecue or in the oven xx


Tomato ketchup – 50ml

Smoked paprika – 2 tsp

Fennel seeds – 1/2 tsp

Garlic – 2 cloves, crushed

Balsamic vinegar – 1 1/2 tsp

Kecap manis (sweet soy sauce) – 1/2 tsp

1 bay leaf

Dried oregano – 1/4 tsp

Juice of 1/2 a lemon

1 small dried chilli – crumbled

Lea & Perrins – 1/2 tsp

Chinese 5 five – 1/4 tsp (optional)

Olive oil – 2 tbsp




Not much to say here, just mix the whole lot together, give it a taste and adjust the seasoning and any ingredient proportions. I do recommend going easy on the 5 spice or leaving it out altogether if you’re not a fan though, as it’s a bit of an acquired taste.
